I realized I needed to get rid of my cellphone for a while when I felt pressure to respond to text messages, email, and social media throughout the day. We all have different expectations. You might expect a response in an hour, someone else might expect a response in ten minutes, another person might expect a response the same day. These expectations are arbitrary. When I eliminated my ability to immediately respond, I was able to toss everyone’s expectations into the ether. Meaningful conversations. Without the banality of ephemeral text conversations, my face-to-face conversations have become more meaningful: when I’m spending time with my closest friends and loved ones, I now have more to discuss in earnest. I enjoy these conversations more than ever. People are supportive and understanding. When we make changes in our lives, we’re often afraid of what people will think. Will they think Im crazy, stupidâ€"out of touch?  People are more supportive and understanding than we thinkâ€"particularly the people closest to us. Especially when we discuss our changes with them, and let them know we’re making the changes so we can live happier lives: our true friends want us to be happy. We program ourselves. Without knowing it, our daily activities have a profound impact on our future selves. I used to reach for my BlackBerry every few minutes no matter where I wasâ€"even at the urinal. Even when the phone wasn’t with me, I had programmed myself to reach for it. What an obscene Twitch! We can reprogram ourselves. We can change these patterns. When we remove a habit from our lives, we become acutely aware of how that habit affected our livesâ€"this is true for any habit: smoking, overeating, etc. It took 22 days for me to reprogram the Twitch, 22 days of pausing to notice why I was Twitching. After 22 days I no longer felt the urge to immediately react; I no longer felt the need to pacify myself with transitory activities like texting or responding to emails during every moment of “downtime.” Downtime is a misnomer. We used to have precious interstitial zones in which we could find momentary solace: airports, checkout lines, waiting rooms, and other transient sanctuaries. No longer is this the case. Now everyone seems to be on their phones during these fleeting moments: they are attempting to be more productive or interactive, but perhaps stopping and thinking will be more effective. The world goes on. Without a cellphone, without the Internet, without a television, the world keeps turning. You can test anything for a short period of time to see if it’s right for you: it’s not difficult to give up anything when you live in the real world. There wasn’t a single time when I actually needed my phone in the last two monthsâ€"there were times when it was inconvenient, times when I had to fight through the frustrationâ€"but that was a small price to pay to reprogram the Twitch. Yes, I’ll return to using a cellphone for practical purposesâ€"GPS, necessary phone calls, the dictionary app I missed dearly, a memo pad, and a few other useful appsâ€"but I’ll use it differently moving forward: I’m not going to use it to check email anymore, I’m not going to use it to send text messages while standing at a urinal, and I’m not going to use it as my primary means of interacting with the world. However, though Elgin claims that he was given permission by the Sultan to do so, he is not able to show the original document that proves the truth to it, although there are said to be translated versions of which in Italian, the authenticity of which are being doubted upon. In the process of doing so, they found out that the claimed document was an accurate translation of an Ottoman firman that is dated July 1801. According to Elgin, he took this as an authorization to remove the marbles from Athens. Now, the question is if any of the Ottoman’s party was informed by this activity of Elgin when it is alleged that the said Italian copy of the firman was not presented to them by Elgin or anyone from his party. According to one of his associates, named Rev. Philip Hunt, he was not able to bring the document because he was not informed th at he was going to testify as a witness to this agreement. The issue gets trickier when William St. Clair, a biographer of Lord Elgin attests to have Hunt’s Italian document and guarantees the accuracy of the English translation when the document presented to the committee actually did not have any signature or the Ottoman’s firman that automatically nulls its validity. Also, the lines contained in the document pertaining to the removal of the marbles in fact only holds a permission for Elgin’s team to fix scaffolding, make drawings, and measure the remains of the ruined buildings and nothing was said about taking it all away (British Museum, n.d.).

Articles of Confederation Essay

During the fight for their independence, Americans were trying to create a new republican government. Their desire was to have a political system in which the majority of the power would come from the people rather than from a supreme authority. As a result, the Articles of Confederation was formed and adopted by the Continental Congress in 1777. In the years of 1781 to 1789, the Articles were put into action and gave limits powers to the national authority, Congress. However, the Articles of Confederation in its critical period, 1781 to 1789, had severe weaknesses in its legislative branch, voting powers, powers of Congress, and states’ sovereignty which led to debts, problems with expansion and unity, and lack of change, development, and representation. Unlike the fore coming Constitution, the Articles of Confederation only had a legislature branch with limited powers which brought forth problems dealing with amendments, taking important measures, and state representation. The Articles stated that each state would have one vote and have between two to seven representers. This would become a problem for many delegates taking long journeys to Congress which would lead to a lack of representation from states like Georgia and Maine. Often seasonal weathers would delay or hinder representers to arrive and cast their votes. In addition, in order for important measures to be placed into action, at least nine of the states had to approve of it. Due to states’ different interest and way of sustaining its people, agreements were hardly made by the majority. Many states had different opinions and voiced out different ideas which contradicts other. This lack of approval by at least nine of the states led to a lack of change. In addition, any amendments like increasing central power and dealing issues involving slaves and women would have to be approved by every state. Similar to approving important measures, states would often disagree on certain circumstances which results in few or none amendments made. Therefore, many aspects of the legislature branch and states’ voting power have weaknesses and led to many problems. In addition to having one branch of power, Congress’s, the only  establishment of national authority, lack of power led to heavy debts, depression, and Shay’s Rebellion. Congress’s power included waging wars, managing foreign relations, and borrowing and issuing money. However it was not allowed to regulate commerce, raise and maintain an army, and levy taxes on the people directly. Although Congress made formal requests, involving troops and taxes to the state, it was frequently refused. This lack to power caused America to go into a postwar depression, inadequate money supply, and inability to pay back debts it owed to foreign nations. In addition, Congress owed money to its soldier from selling war bonds. Depressed and frustrated veterans joined forces under Daniels Shays in Massachusetts and set of demands that consisted of paper money, tax relief particularly from state, relocation of state capital, and ending of imprisonment for debt. As a result of these problems, many Americans started to notice the flaws and imperfections of the Articles of Confederation. In addition, each state of America had almost all of its sovereignty and decision making which increased a lack of national unity and problems with expansion, the West, and foreign relations.
